Self-described "avant-goth metallers" the Provenance came together in Gothenburg, Sweden, around 1995, founded by Emma Hellstrom on vocals, flute, and keyboard alongside Tobias Martinsson handling vocals and guitar plus Joel Lindell on drums. They quickly established themselves with frequent appearances across the city's renowned heavy metal venues and moved into the studio to cut their earliest demo recordings, 1996's "Requiem of Mankind" followed by 1997's "Endless Confinement," the second of which also included lead guitarist Joakim Rosen. A lengthy pause in activity ensued after Hellstrom moved to France for a year, yet the group picked up where they had left off once she came back, bringing bassist Jonnie Tall into the fold to record their first full-length effort, 2001's 25th Hour; Bleeding. The set drew strong inspiration from Holland's Gathering and similar gothic-tinged progressive rock acts while incorporating touches of death metal, an unsurprising development in light of the style's status as Gothenburg's signature musical contribution. Work on the follow-up, Still at Arms Length, commenced shortly after the debut appeared, and Scarlet Records issued the album in early 2003.
