The Red Clay Strays carry unmistakable Southern origins, a five-piece ensemble that blends Americana textures with modern country sensibilities. Rooted in Alabama, the group merges Southern rock energy and an outlaw posture, grounding their bold delivery in rich soul influences alongside the incisive, muscular storytelling tradition of Red Dirt country. Those qualities surfaced clearly across their unpolished yet vivid debut album Moment of Truth, issued in 2022 and featuring the simmering romantic ballad “Wondering Why,” which surged into a viral sensation. By late 2023 the song had migrated from online platforms onto the Billboard charts, coinciding with the band’s work on a follow-up LP alongside the respected Americana producer Dave Cobb.

Mobile natives, the Red Clay Strays came together in 2016 after emerging from an earlier covers outfit that included lead vocalist and guitarist Brandon Coleman plus bassist Andrew Bishop. Once that ensemble disbanded, the pair recruited guitarist and vocalist Drew Nix, whose prior assistance had secured bookings for the group, along with guitarist Zach Rishel and drummer John Hall. Maintaining a rigorous performance schedule, the musicians accepted every available opportunity while gradually introducing original songs amid the cover material. In 2019 they joined Conway Entertainment Group, an affiliation that placed their track “Good Godly Woman” in Doctor Sleep, Mike Flanagan’s follow-up to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. Two further singles, “No Way to Know” and “Will the Lord Remember Me,” appeared in 2020 before the band turned to crowdfunding to finance Moment of Truth.

Captured live on the studio floor with the majority of its songs co-written by Nix and Coleman’s brother Matthew, the album arrived in 2022. Its opening single “Wondering Why” quickly gained traction online and later reached the Billboard charts toward the close of 2023. The Red Clay Strays marked that momentum by maintaining a heavy touring pace, appearing at numerous festivals and supporting acts ranging from Old Crow Medicine Show, Paul Cauthen, and Nikki Lane to Kip Moore, Eric Church, and Brothers Osborne. The roadwork propelled the quintet from club venues through amphitheaters and ultimately to a debut engagement at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium spanning three consecutive nights—an uncommon feat previously accomplished by only a select few artists such as Turnpike Troubadours and Chris Stapleton.

Amid this activity the group issued the EP The Red Clay Strays Live AF Session in August, followed in December by the single “Sunshine” drawn from those same recordings. Around the same time the Red Clay Strays aligned with Thirty Tigers and began sessions for their eagerly awaited 2024 release under Dave Cobb’s production. Following the first album’s breakthrough, they moved once more, this time to RCA Records, which supported the launch of their sophomore effort Made by These Moments later that year.
