Brooklyn MC Rock, born Jamal Bush and widely known by his “Rockness Monstah” moniker, first drew notice through the gravelly baritone and hard-edged rhymes that defined his contributions as the more prominent member of the mid-’90s duo Heltah Skeltah. Alongside partner Ruck—later recognized as Sean Price—he supplied key verses to the Boot Camp Clik’s body of work, most notably the crew’s celebrated 1996 debut album Nocturnal. Rock helped lay the foundation for the collective itself when he and Price connected with Buckshot in 1994, securing a deal that same year on the BCC-affiliated imprint Duck Down.

His distinctive delivery first gained wider attention on the underground boom-bap single “Leflaur Leflauh Eshkoshka,” where he handled the hook; though credited to the Fab 5 (Heltah Skeltah joined by the Originoo Gunn Clappaz), the track appeared on the Nocturnal LP. Following the release of the duo’s second album, Magnum Force, in 1998, Rock parted ways with both Heltah Skeltah and Duck Down amid disputes involving parent label Priority, which ultimately ended its distribution arrangement with Duck Down in 2000.

Embarking on a solo path, he signed with the fledgling Lethal Dose Records, an imprint launched by Limp Bizkit’s DJ Lethal. Two singles emerged during this period—“Let’s Rock,” produced by Rockwilder, and “Like a G,” helmed by Scott Storch and featuring Nate Dogg—yet the planned major-label debut Planet Rock, slated for Geffen, was abandoned along with the Lethal Dose venture, returning Rock to an uncertain position.

Both he and Price navigated a stretch of inconsistent momentum until Duck Down reasserted itself within underground hip-hop circles in 2005. Rock rejoined the circle, contributing guest verses to Price’s Monkey Barz that year and to the Boot Camp Clik’s reunion project The Last Stand in 2006. Before the duo could complete their intended Heltah Skeltah follow-up, tentatively titled D.I.R.T. (“Da Incredible Rap Team”), Rock was arrested and indicted in January 2008 on assault and attempted-murder charges. Posted out on $125,000 bail, he confronted the prospect of five- to 25-year sentences on each count.
