In 1979, while still enrolled in high school in Ontario, vocalist and guitarist Gordon Deppe joined forces with bassist Sandy Horne to launch the Spoons. Drummer Derrick Ross and keyboardist Rob Preuss came aboard shortly afterward, enabling the band to cut its debut album, Stick Figure Neighborhood, for Ready Records in 1981. Arias and Symphonies and Talkback appeared during the following two years, after which Scott MacDonald stepped in for Rob Preuss and Ian Hendry took over for Derrick Ross. Guitarist Colin Cripps was also brought into the fold, contributing to the 1986 Anthem release Bridges over Borders. Two years later the group issued Vertigo Tango.
