Formed during the winter of 1994-1995 in Ballard, WA, the doom metal and death metal band Thorr's Hammer resulted from a brief six-week collaboration that spanned just two concerts, brought together by guitarists Greg Anderson, who would later join Goatsnake and Sunn 0]]] among others, and Stephen O'Malley, destined for Burning Witch, Khanate, and another stint with Sunn 0]]]. Bassist James Hale and drummer Jamie Sykes were enlisted next, followed by the addition of 17-year-old Norwegian vocalist and lyricist Runhild Gammelsaeter, known also as Ozma, whose presence injected an unpredictable element into the group's characteristically slow and heavy doom metal and death metal approach. Their short-lived and somber partnership is documented on the three-track Dommedagsnatt, which first appeared as a cassette-only release through Moribund Records before Southern Lord issued it on CD in 1998 and again in 2004, this time incorporating a multimedia feature with an extremely scarce live performance video of Thorr's Hammer.
