The post-hardcore outfit Trophy Scars draws from an unusually broad palette that includes prominent piano textures, extended progressive-rock guitar excursions, and sporadic rhythmic nods to hip-hop and funk, setting them apart from most peers in their field; certain passages even recall the atmospheric art-rock approach of the U.K. band Talk Talk refracted through an emo lens. Frontman Jerry Jones further distinguishes the group with a dry, understated wit, inserting his own name into lyrics and titles with a frequency unmatched since Vanilla Ice.

The five-piece formed in Morristown, NJ, during 2001, its original lineup consisting of Jones alongside guitarist and pianist John Ferrara, lead guitarist A.J. Hanson, bassist Joshua Weinstein, and drummer Brian Ferrara. A steadily expanding concert following prompted the self-released 2002 EP Darts to the Sea, later expanded with a bonus disc of period demos and reissued in March 2006, as well as the 2003 album Hospital Music for the Aesthetics of Language. The group then joined the roster of the independent imprint The Death Scene Recording Company, which reissued the full-length in 2004 and secured a slot on that year’s Vans Warped Tour. Their next effort, the more experimental and piano-centric Goodnight Alchemy, appeared in June 2005; Weinstein departed shortly afterward and was succeeded by Andy Farrell. June 2006 brought the band’s fourth album, Alphabet. Alphabets., which amplified its hip-hop leanings through contributions from New Jersey underground rapper Kadence Posse on the tracks “Assassin, Assassins” and “Accent, Accents.”
