Biography
While still performing with Be Your Own Pet, guitarist and vocalist Jonas Stein launched the Southern-fried punk project Turbo Fruits. Its first incarnation featured Be Your Own Pet drummer John Eatherly, after which the pair brought in bassist Max Peebles to record the self-titled debut album, issued in the U.K. in 2006 and in the U.S. the next year on Thurston Moore’s Ecstatic Peace! imprint. Following the 2008 dissolution of Be Your Own Pet, Stein kept Turbo Fruits active by enlisting bassist Wes Traylor and drummer Zack Martin for the sophomore LP Echo Kid, although both musicians departed shortly before its fall 2009 release on Fat Possum. During that same season the group also appeared in the film Whip It. Stein subsequently added drummer Matt Hearn and bassist Dave McCowen to restore the rhythm section and, in 2010, brought second guitarist Kingsley Brock into the lineup. The band’s third album, Butter, surfaced in 2012.
