In the middle of the 1990s, Tuscadero joined numerous other bands delivering lighthearted punk-pop sounds. Drawing from discarded 1970s pop artifacts along with idealized memories of youth, this quartet hailing from Washington DC composed songs in that style celebrating TV shows—they derived their moniker from the Leather Tuscadero persona created by Suzi Quatro on Happy Days—along with adolescent infatuations and familial conflicts. Under the guidance of Meilssa Farris handling vocals and guitar alongside Margaret McCartney on the same instruments, the group developed a dedicated audience within independent rock circles through their initial pair of releases, The Pink Album from 1994 and Step Into My Wiggle Room in 1995, both issued by TeenBeat Records located in DC. The year 1996 brought a contract from Elektra Records, resulting in their first effort on a major label, which consisted of a reworked and partly rerecorded edition of The Pink Album that came out during the latter part of that same summer. Spring of 1998 saw the arrival of My Way or the Highway, marking Tuscadero's initial project conceived expressly for Elektra.
