Ty Tabor stands out among guitarists through his singular approach, merging sharp riffs, atmospheric layers, and expansive leads. Serving as lead guitarist, songwriter, and co-vocalist in the enduring progressive rock outfit King’s X, he has maintained a busy parallel path as a solo artist, delivering a steady stream of distinctive releases such as Safety (2002), Trip Magnet (2010), Alien Beans (2018), and Shades (2022). Additional ventures have taken shape in the progressive rock supergroups Platypus, Xenuphobe, and the Jelly Jam.

Born September 17, 1961, in Jackson, Mississippi, Tabor picked up the guitar early and assembled a bluegrass trio featuring his brother on banjo and his father on washtub bass; the group performed at festivals throughout the state and shared bills with country icons Grandpa Jones and Minnie Pearl. During his teenage years he shifted toward hard rock, absorbing the sounds of KISS, Rush, the Beatles, Queen, and Aerosmith while logging countless hours replicating their songs. This immersion prompted him to pursue music professionally, leading him to assemble rock bands across the South in the late ’70s and early ’80s, including the Christian rock group Matthew. Around the same period he developed a deep admiration for Phil Keaggy’s playing and formed a new trio with former members of Keaggy’s band—bassist/vocalist Doug Pinnick and drummer Jerry Gaskill.

After cycling through the names the Edge and Sneak Preview, the trio adopted the moniker King’s X. By fusing Tabor’s melodic, Beatles-inspired songcraft with Pinnick’s expressive vocals and a heavy style echoing Queen and Rush, the band earned widespread critical regard, issuing Atlantic Records classics including Gretchen Goes to Nebraska, Faith Hope Love, and Dogman. Although widespread commercial breakthrough has remained elusive, relentless roadwork has cultivated a devoted audience. During a 1997 touring hiatus Tabor issued his debut solo effort, Naomi’s Solar Pumpkin, initially available only by mail order; its successor, Moonflower Lane, appeared the following year on Metal Blade Records. Despite breakup speculation, King’s X delivered its seventh studio album, Tape Head, in October 1998, then continued with Please Come Home...Mr. Bulbous (2000), Ogre Tones (2005), and XV (2008).

Tabor’s solo output has also encompassed Moonflower Lane (1999), Rock Garden (2006), Nobody Wins When Nobody Plays (2013), and Angry Monk (2020). He co-founded the prog-metal supergroup Platypus alongside musicians from Dream Theater and the Dixie Dregs, resulting in When Pus Comes to Shove (1998) and Ice Cycles (2000). Further collaborations include the Jelly Jam, Xenuphobe, Jughead, and the Jibbs. He has contributed guest performances to Carmine Appice’s Guitar Zeus and Greg Bissonette’s self-titled debut while handling mixing or mastering duties for Geek, Driving West, Poundhound, and Supershine.
