Urchin originated as an initial project for Adrian Smith, who would go on to become Iron Maiden’s guitarist, when he established the group alongside his childhood friend Dave Murray on guitar—the same musician who would later help secure Smith’s entry into the renowned British heavy metal act. Although Smith had already played in multiple amateur outfits during his late teens, it was Urchin, launched around 1974, that allowed the emerging guitarist to build a reputation across London’s pub venues. Numerous players rotated through the band’s ranks over time, yet the configuration featuring vocalist David Hall, guitarists Smith and Maurice Coyne (previously recruited by Steve Harris for the nascent Iron Maiden), bassist Alan Levitt, and drummer Barry Tyler secured a development deal with Elton John’s DJM label. That partnership yielded the 1977 debut 7" single “Black Leather Fantasy,” a biker-themed track drawing from the melodic hard rock approach of Thin Lizzy and UFO. The following year brought a second single, “She’s a Roller,” which adopted a markedly more commercial direction and achieved greater success, though live observers consistently maintained that neither recording fully conveyed the band’s stage intensity. Amid the punk-dominated landscape that hindered hard rock and metal acts, Urchin persisted without major headway until Smith accepted a second invitation to join Iron Maiden in late 1980. The group then dissolved, leaving its 1970s singles to command high prices among Iron Maiden collectors, while its remaining tracks appeared on a self-titled CD for a short period in 2004.
