Vamp, a Norwegian folk-rock ensemble that has earned widespread critical praise, launched their debut album to award-winning acclaim back in 1993, consistently climbing to the highest positions on their home country's album rankings in subsequent years. The group came together in Haugesund, Norway during 1990, with its initial lineup featuring Jan Toft handling vocals alongside Torbjørn Økland on guitar, mandolin, bouzouki, and trumpet; Øyvind Staveland contributing violin, viola, accordion, and flute; Carl Øyvind Apeland playing bass, guitar, and keyboards; plus Erling Sande on drums. Jan Toft, one of the founders, stepped away from vocal duties in 1998, making way for Vidar Johnsen, who in turn was succeeded by Paul Hansen in 2008. Erling Sande departed during 1995, while Odin Staveland, handling keyboard, drums, guitar, and vocals, became a member starting in 2008. Their first commercial release arrived as an independently issued single in 1991. After inking a contract with MajorStudio in 1992, the group issued their initial full-length effort Godmorgen, Søster during 1993. Regarded today as a landmark recording, Godmorgen, Søster includes Rita Eriksen providing guest vocals on "Tir N'a Noir," widely regarded as Vamp's signature track. Beyond its sales performance, which placed it in the Norwegian Top 20 and generated multiple radio favorites, the album also garnered critical recognition, securing the band's inaugural Spellemannprisen honor among many others. Although it received comparatively muted critical response, Horisonter from 1994 outperformed its predecessor commercially by peaking at number six, and aside from the live album Folken released in 1996, the studio efforts that closed out the 1990s—13 Humler (1996), Flua På Veggen (1998), and Ei Med Alt (1999)—each achieved Top Ten status. Entering the new millennium, the band reached the albums chart's Top Five on two occasions via En Annen Sol in 2000 and Månemannen in 2002, then achieved number one placements with Siste Stikk (2005), Vamp I Full Symfoni Med Kringkastingsorkesteret (2006), and St. Mandag (2008). Additionally, a fresh take on "Tir N'a Noir" propelled Vamp into the upper echelons of the singles ranking during 2006.
