Vesala, a Finnish singer and songwriter, first gained widespread recognition through her role in the pop/rock group PMMP before pursuing work under her own name. Born Paula Julia Vesala in Kärsämäki, Finland, she later enrolled at Helsinki’s Sibelius Academy, where she concentrated on music education alongside classical vocal training. After completing those studies, she began supplying original material to several prominent Finnish performers, among them Johanna Kurkela, Jenni Vartiainen, and Martti Saarinen. Her skill with words earned formal recognition in 2016 through receipt of the Juha Vainio Award.

The band PMMP came together in 2003 and quickly found an audience with the hit single “Rusketusraidat ‘Tan Lines.’” Their second album, Kovemmat Kädet, reached double-platinum certification by 2010. Throughout their existence the group also devoted energy to social causes, backing Amnesty International’s initiatives and endorsing Pussy Riot’s efforts on behalf of human rights in Russia. Five additional studio releases followed before the members performed their last concert together at Helsinki Ice Hall on October 27, 2013 and announced the end of the project.

Once PMMP had dissolved, Paula Vesala began performing solely under the surname Vesala and launched a solo career. Her initial single, “Tequila,” surfaced in 2015, with a self-titled debut album arriving the next year. The synth-pop record attained platinum status within just a few months of release.
