Born to actress Marja-Leena Kouki and composer Toni Edelmann, soft pop vocalist Samuli Casimir Edelmann ranked among Finland’s foremost singers and actors throughout the 1990s and 2000s. His parallel paths in film and music both drew early notice and sustained steady momentum, so that neither field eclipsed the other. He continues to be recognized for an extensive body of acclaimed screen and television performances, among them the Finnish-language voice of the title character in Shrek. On the music side he collected three Emmas, Finland’s principal music honors, taking Best New Male Artist in 1991 and Artist of the Year in both 1994 and 2001. The same year he completed his studies at the Theatre Academy of Finland, 1991, he scored his initial breakthrough with the hit “Pienestä Kii” and with “Peggy,” a track shortlisted as Finland’s Eurovision entry; the album that housed both songs, Peggy – Pienestä Kii, became the first of his three platinum releases. Working frequently as a duet artist, he joined Sani of Aikakone in 1995 on the ballad “Tuhat Yötä,” which held a place in the Finnish Top Ten for ten weeks and ranked among the year’s biggest successes. The 1997 album Vaiheet set texts by Hesse, Goethe, Shakespeare, and Denisov to music composed by his father. Although output slowed modestly after he issued roughly one album annually through most of the 1990s, 2001’s Kaikki Tahtoo—preceded by a gold-certified Greatest Hits collection—still reached platinum. A comparatively modest performance for 2006’s Voittola was followed the next year by Virsiä, a set of traditional Christian hymns issued in time for Christmas that led the Finnish charts for five weeks.
