A dusky-toned Swedish jazz and pop vocalist, Viktoria Tolstoy enjoys wide acclaim across Europe. Her lilting, emotive delivery has shaped a distinctive blend of jazz, pop, and folk through close partnerships with pianist Esbjörn Svensson and trombonist Nils Landgren. She first emerged during the 1990s, issuing several chart-topping jazz recordings such as White Russian in 1997 and the German Jazz Award-winning Shining on You in 2004. As a descendant of novelist Leo Tolstoy, she has examined her dual Swedish and Russian heritage through the 2005 release My Swedish Heart and the 2008 album My Russian Soul. Tolstoy has also contributed regularly to producer Landgren’s projects, among them Funky ABBA in 2004 and The Moon, the Stars and You in 2011.

Born Louise Viktoria Tolstoy in Sigtuna, Sweden, in 1974, she grew up in a creative household as the daughter of musicologist and jazz musician Erik Kjellberg and as the great-great-granddaughter of the renowned Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy. Raised in Uppsala, she started singing early and performed in clubs alongside her father while still a teenager. One such performance drew the notice of a record executive, leading to a contract. Her debut, Smile, Love and Spice, arrived in 1997 and included several compositions by her father. The well-received album introduced her to leading Swedish jazz figures who served as key mentors, among them Arne Domnérus, Putte Wickman, and Svante Thuresson. Two years later she issued the more pop-leaning För Älskad, which reached the top of the Swedish charts. The similarly crossover-oriented White Russian followed that same year, produced by pianist Esbjörn Svensson, and likewise achieved strong chart success. After its release she toured Germany with Svensson’s trio.

In the ensuing years she performed with bass legend Ray Brown and pianist McCoy Tyner before delivering the standards-focused quartet recording Blame It on My Youth in 2000. Around this period trombonist Nils Landgren began mentoring the singer, while she broadened her visibility by appearing on the first season of Sweden’s Big Brother. She joined the ACT label and released the Landgren-produced Shining on You in 2004, again featuring Svensson and a guest appearance by harmonica player Toots Thielemans. The album reached number two on the Swedish jazz charts and received a German Jazz Award. Following its launch she toured Europe and joined Landgren on Funky ABBA, performing with ABBA’s Benny Andersson.

In 2005 Tolstoy honored Sweden’s jazz legacy on My Swedish Heart, which presented interpretations of works by Jan Johansson, Lars Gullin, Anders Jormin, longtime pianist Svensson, and additional composers. The album topped Sweden’s jazz charts and peaked at number two in Germany. A year later she returned with Pictures of Me, offering her versions of contemporary pop material by Peter Gabriel, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, and others. She next delved into her Russian ancestry with the Landgren-produced My Russian Soul in 2008, mixing reworked traditional pieces with classics by Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky, Sergei Rachmaninov, and further composers. The Herbie Hancock tribute Letters to Herbie appeared in 2011. She then collaborated with pianist Jacob Karlzon on the intimate duo set A Moment of Now in 2013. In 2017 she released Meet Me at the Movies with Finnish jazz pianist Iiro Rantala, placing her personal imprint on film themes originally performed by women.
