Metal enthusiasts who considered outfits such as W.A.S.P. and Mötley Crüe insufficiently threatening or intense discovered White Zombie as an ideal remedy throughout the middle and later stretch of the 1990s, merging visuals and themes drawn from low-budget horror films with crushing sounds and guttural vocals. Although White Zombie initially registered as a complete ensemble, observers eventually recognized that the project derived almost wholly from the imagination of its outsized frontman, Rob Zombie. The White Zombie narrative therefore opens with the performer then known as Rob Cummings, immediately after he left his birthplace of Haverhill, Massachusetts, for New York City in the opening years of the 1980s.
Long an admirer of theatrical metal acts including Kiss and Alice Cooper along with punk groups such as the Ramones, Rob refrained from assembling a band upon arrival in the Big Apple and instead served as a production assistant on the television program Pee Wee's Playhouse while handling art direction for periodicals. In 1985 he chose to chase a musical path, joining forces with his girlfriend at the time, bassist Sean Yseult, to establish White Zombie, a name taken from the 1932 Bela Lugosi picture. Initially viewed as a New York underground act rather than a heavy metal unit, a status confirmed by early supporters including Thurston Moore and Kurt Cobain, the group put out several independent recordings: Gods of Voodoo Moon in 1985, Pig Heaven and Psycho-Head Blowout in 1986, Soul Crusher in 1987, and Make Them Die Slowly in 1989, even as guitarists and drummers rotated through the lineup on a regular basis, among them drummers Ivan DePrume and John Tempesta.
White Zombie secured a lasting guitarist when former Rights of the Accused member J., whose legal name is Jay Noel Yuenger, came aboard; his metallic riffs pushed the band's sound deeper into heavy metal territory, illustrated by the first release featuring J., an EP that included a cover of Kiss' "God of Thunder." At the same juncture White Zombie began folding industrial rock textures into its approach, rendering it one of the rare hard rock groups of the period that listeners could also dance to. Sensing an imminent breakout from the underground, Geffen Records signed the band and released its major-label debut, La Sexorcisto: Devil Music, Vol. 1, in early 1992. While Seattle rock dominated the era, persistent touring plus MTV exposure for the trashy video of "Thunder Kiss '65" through the animated series Beavis and Butt-head propelled the album to belated success, allowing it to reach the Top 30 a full year after its release.
Crafting a suitable successor to La Sexorcisto required an extended stretch, yet Astro-Creep: 2000 -- Songs of Love, Destruction and Other Synthetic Delusions of the Electric Head finally appeared in 1995. Yielding another major rock-radio and MTV staple in "More Human Than Human," Astro-Creep: 2000 stands as White Zombie's highest-charting album, attaining the number-six position on the U.S. Billboard charts. The record's commercial peak could not mask Rob Zombie's growing impatience with the group and his desire to begin a solo career. Once the supporting tour concluded and the remix collection Supersexy Swingin' Sounds appeared in 1996, White Zombie disbanded. Rob Zombie subsequently delivered solo albums that included the 1998 release Hellbilly Deluxe, the 1999 set American Made Music to Strip By, and the 2001 effort The Sinister Urge, while also writing and directing the horror film House of 1000 Corpses; Yseult meanwhile launched the campy surf-rock trio Famous Monsters, which issued In the Night!!! in 1998 and Around the World in 80 Bikinis in 1999.
Throughout the twenty-first century Rob Zombie kept exploring horror-rock directions, yet in 2016 Numero Group honored White Zombie's formative period by issuing the box set It Came from N.Y.C., which documented every independent recording the band made during the 1980s.
