Biography
Blair Howerton, serving as Why Bonnie’s vocalist, principal songwriter, and guitarist, steers the band’s introspective indie rock, which moves between ethereal reflection and firmer emotional currents. The group first unveiled its reverb-saturated approach via two EPs issued in 2018. Those recordings attracted Fat Possum, which released the Voice Box EP in 2020, before Keeled Scales issued the band’s debut full-length, the country-tinged 90 in November, in 2022. Their second album, Wish on the Bone, adopted a more forceful tone and wider stylistic range and appeared on Fire Talk in 2024.
The Austin, Texas collective formed in 2015 when Howerton joined guitarist Sam Houdek, keyboardist Kendall Powell, bassist Chance Williams, and drummer Mitch Lamon. Sports Day Records issued their earliest material, the cassette EPs In Water and Nightgown, in 2018. After Silver Jews’ David Berman died in August 2019, the band recorded a standalone charity version of the group’s “Dallas” before signing with Fat Possum Records; Voice Box followed in April 2020.
Although the project had moved to Brooklyn by the time that EP appeared, its first long-player remained deeply shaped by Texas, leading the members to travel to Silsbee with new drummer Josh Malett to record alongside producer Tommy Read of Lomelda and alexalone. Keeled Scales, the Austin-based imprint, released the nostalgic 90 in November in August 2022.
While developing newer songs less anchored in reminiscence and more attuned to present-day concerns, Howerton sought to enlarge and fortify the band’s sound. Howerton, Williams, and Malett enlisted co-producer Jonathan Schenke, previously associated with Pottery and Foyer Red, for the impassioned Wish on the Bone, which Fire Talk issued in August 2024.
