Biography
Willem Vermandere, recognized as a traditional Belgian folksinger, also works as a cabaret performer, writer, poet, philosopher, sculptor, and painter, regarding himself first and foremost as an artist rather than a musician. Born in Lauwe in 1940, he began his professional life teaching religious studies until a mixture of humorous and socially conscious songs focused on everyday existence established him as one of the leading figures on the West Flemish scene of the 1960s. Supported throughout by his regular backing musicians Freddy Desmedt on flute and clarinet and Pol Depoorter on guitar and mandolin, Vermandere has sustained an active touring career ever since, marking his 70th birthday in 2011 with the release of Alles Gaat Over.
