Born Jozef Guillaume in Mol, Belgium in 1945, Zjef Vanuytsel ranked among the leading Flemish vocalists throughout the 1970s, when his opening release, De Zotte Morgen, earned widespread recognition as one of Belgium’s finest cabaret-pop recordings. A run of chart successes followed during the same decade, among them “Houten Kop,” “Hop Marlene,” and “Ik Weet Wel Mijn Lief,” yet momentum proved difficult to maintain once the 1980s arrived, prompting him to apply his architecture training to the design of the municipal buildings in Huldenberg and Bertem. He reentered the recording sphere in 2007, issuing Ouwe Makkers—his first studio album in twenty-four years.
