Belonging to the indie rock outfit Of Montreal, Davey Pierce and Nicolas Dobbratz have performed a funky, glam-tinged strain of indie disco, yet their own endeavor Yip Deceiver commits fully to electro and the dancefloor. Both musicians draw from '80s synth pop as well as Prince, Luther Vandross, and Chaka Khan. The project originated during a drive to an Of Montreal performance when an Usher track aired on the radio; their enthusiastic duet sparked the idea for a venture centered on synth textures and dance rhythms. Serving as "sonic lovechild" and "executive vibes manager" respectively, the pair delivered its inaugural concert on New Year's Eve 2010 at the 40 Watt club in Athens, Georgia. One year afterward the self-titled debut EP appeared via Dobby's Aerobic International imprint. The full-length Medallius arrived in 2013 on New West and spotlighted the single "Get Strict." The duo spent the subsequent two years traversing the United States, then released a split single with Ruby the Rabbitfoot in September 2015 that reinterpreted Jennifer Paige's '90s hit "Crush." The EP YPD followed soon after and contained "Red Line," co-written and produced by Harlan Silverman (Mayer Hawthorne, RØMANS).
