Yo-Yo, born Yolanda Whitaker, stands out as one of the most refined yet unpredictable women in rap. Rather than adopting a strongly feminist stance, she encourages young women toward sexual restraint while emphasizing the need to rely on intellect alongside physical presence. On her 1993 album You Better Ask Somebody she adopted a sharper edge, trading earlier openness for a more combative posture. Both her lyrics and the album’s overall tone left little room for concession. Previously inclined toward conciliation at times, she now projected a stark, assertive presence, above all when insisting on respect. She resurfaced in 1996 with Total Control, then issued Ebony two years afterward.
