Biography
Chad Valencia operates under the recording alias Yuk. as a Los Angeles experimental hip-hop producer and serves as co-founder of the DJ and artist collective My Hollow Drum. His abstract sound constructions rely on hazy, smudgy atmospheres paired with splintered beats while frequently weaving in found sounds and organic instrumentation. Valencia maintains a strong preference for analog equipment and media rather than digital tools, relying heavily on cassette recorders throughout the creation of his music. Releases such as 2015’s a n a k have reached listeners through Stones Throw-affiliated Leaving Records.
My Hollow Drum began in 2007 when Valencia joined fellow beat junkies including Teebs and Bahwee. His debut cassette, a d w a, appeared in 2010, after which Matthewdavid’s Leaving Records supplied the digital edition. The following year brought Of Wilderness, a digital mixtape built from remixes and collaborations with several L.A. beat scene regulars such as Knxwledge, Devonwho, and Ras G. Yuk. has appeared on scene-surveying compilations issued by Dublab, Stones Throw, and Dropping Gems as well as on albums and mixes by Mndsgn and Teebs. In 2014 he co-founded the Filipino restaurant LASA together with his brother Chase Valencia. Leaving Records issued a n a k, Yuk.’s sophomore album, in 2015 across digital, cassette, and vinyl formats. Although his career as a chef kept him occupied, he returned in 2019 with the EP titled Paraiso.
