Zach Top sings with a perceptible yet tempered drawl that recalls Alan Jackson, a resemblance he plays up on “Sounds Like the Radio,” a 1990s-flavored track that also affirms the lasting appeal of classic barroom country. He focuses on unadorned honky-tonk, favoring a lilting dancefloor groove over emphatic beats. That understated approach and retro sensibility first surfaced on his self-titled 2022 debut and received fuller expression on the 2024 album Cold Beer & Country Music, which functions as his artistic statement.

Raised on a ranch in Sunnyside, Washington, Top developed an early passion for traditional country; Marty Robbins’ Gunfighter Ballads & Trail Songs left an especially deep mark. At age seven he formed a bluegrass group with his siblings. During his teenage years he ventured beyond the family circle, joining North Country in 2015 before becoming a member of Modern Tradition, which captured the 2017 Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America international band title.

He launched his solo career in 2019 with the single “In a World Gone Wrong,” which registered on the Bluegrass Today charts. After relocating to Nashville, Top immersed himself in vintage country sounds. He secured a publishing agreement with Major Bob Music and supplied five songs to Joshua Hedley’s Neon Blue, all while refining his stage presence; this groundwork led to his first Grand Ole Opry appearance in July 2022. The self-titled album he issued that year still featured players from Modern Tradition, yet over the ensuing two years he issued singles that highlighted his shift toward country, notably underscoring his admiration for George Jones on the 2023 release “Justa Jonesin’.” Many of those tracks were collected on Cold Beer & Country Music, whose smartly crafted numbers such as “Bad Luck” and “I Never Lie” propelled the album to number 29 on the Country Albums chart and onto the Billboard 200.
