Biography
4Lyn emerged as a nu-metal and crossover outfit from Hamburg, Germany, landing a Universal deal at the peak of the genre’s global wave when countless acts copied the American blueprint. Although critical notices stayed lukewarm, the group built a lasting career and cultivated a dedicated following.
The four musicians first assembled in 1995 under the name Headtrip while still enrolled in local high schools. Early membership shifts did not halt their output of demos or live appearances, and a 2000 performance at Hamburg’s Club Logo during the Ohrenschmaus Festival drew interest from talent scouts. Because “Headtrip” proved too widespread, the band adopted the title 4Lyn, with the numeral denoting their head count and the letters standing for “loud, young, nobodies.”
At that point the roster comprised vocalist Braz (born Ron Cazzato), guitarist Kane Wikked (born Bennie Eckebrecht), drummer Chino (born Sascha Carrilho), and bassist Bigg Deee (born Björn Düßler), the last of whom had already produced the group’s initial recordings before becoming a member. Their self-titled Universal debut arrived in 2001 and received divided responses: some highlighted the quartet’s drive and cohesive playing, yet others dismissed them as derivative followers of the prevailing American nu-metal wave.
Undeterred, 4Lyn mounted an extensive touring schedule that included support slots for Papa Roach, Thumb, and Therapy?, though not before Kane Wikked departed and longtime friend of Chino’s, Russo (born René Knupper), took over guitar duties. In 2002 the band appeared at additional festivals, shared bills with Dredg and Cosmotron, and tracked their second album, Neon, in Denmark. Reviews again proved uneven, yet audience support remained steady.
Following further dates across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, the group exited Universal for Edel and issued its third album, Take It as a Compliment, in 2004. Recorded domestically with producer Chris Wolff, the record maintained the stylistic path of its predecessors. That year also brought appearances at Berlinova, Rock im Park, and Rock am Ring alongside ongoing live commitments. In 2005 the band supplied the theme “Go, Sea Devils” for the Hamburg Sea Devils American football franchise and released the self-produced fourth album Compadres. Their fifth effort, Hello, surfaced in late 2007.
