Subway to Sally represents a genuine fusion of musical styles. Rooted in heavy metal, the band distinguishes itself from typical metal enthusiasts through its integration of progressive and folk anthems alongside elements from early music and liturgical traditions. The guitar work, split evenly between acoustic and electric tones, comes from the trio consisting of Ingo Hampf, Bodenski, and Simon. Frau Schmidt, the violinist, delivers a Robbie Steinhardt-inspired classic roll with the same intensity she applies to softer, more conventional sections. The standout unusual feature of the group is lead singer Eric Fish, whose approach evokes the styles of two often-criticized rock vocalists, namely Lee Jackson and Roger Chapman. Even with traces of Chapman's well-known vibrato and Jackson's characteristic density, Fish delivers an accessible and harmonious vocal performance. Although each successive album showed a slow departure from traditional material, the 1999 release Hochzeit marked the complete emergence of their harder edge while maintaining ties to their original inspirations. In 2000, the band put out a live album titled Schrei!, with the fresh Herzblut following in the next year. Engelskrieger from 2003 saw the ensemble emphasizing their metal foundations more strongly. Nord Nord Ost came out in 2005, and then the CD/DVD package Nackt appeared in 2006.
