Biography
Germany's In Extremo—Latin for “at the edge”—fuse folk and heavy metal into a melody-rich, high-impact sound that pairs the classic hard-rock core of vocals, guitar, bass, and drums with medieval instruments such as bagpipes, hurdy-gurdy, harp, and shawm. The group is recognized for its medieval subject matter, lyrics, and instrumentation, along with its members’ colorful stage names and period attire; its repertoire mixes original material with traditional pieces, many sung in Latin or old German dialects. Since emerging in 1997, In Extremo have steadily expanded their audience, particularly in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, through albums that reached the top of the charts, among them 7, Mein Rasend Herz, and Sängerkrieg. Although the distinctive array of instruments has stayed largely intact, the band shifted its emphasis toward the heavier side of metal during the late 2000s and 2010s.
Formed in Berlin in 1995 and solidified over the following two years, the lineup consists of Das Letzte Einhorn (Michael Robert Rhein, vocals), Der Lange (Sebastian Oliver Lange, guitar), Die Lutter (Kay Lutter, bass), Dr. Pymonte (André Strugala, bagpipes), Flex der Biegsame (Marco Ernst-Felix Zorzytzky, bagpipes), and Specki T.D. (Florian Speckardt, drums). Past members include Die Rote Füchsin (Conny Fuchs, bagpipes, 1995-1996), Thomas der Münzer (Thomas Mund, guitar, 1995-1999), Sen Pusterbalg (bagpipes, 1995-1997), Der Morgenstern (Reiner Morgenroth, drums, 1995–2010), and Yellow Pfeiffer (Boris Pfeiffer, bagpipes, 1997-2021). The band issued its first recording in 1997, the five-track single “Der Galgen,” then released its debut full-length album, Gold (also issued as In Extremo Gold and reissued with bonus tracks in 2006). Later releases included the commercial breakthrough 7 (2003), Mein Rasend Herz (2005), and Raue Spree 2005 (2006), each of which entered the German albums chart inside the Top Five; the group also enjoyed modest single success, highlighted by the Top 40 entries “Küss Mich” (2003) and “Nur Ihr Allein” (2005).
Sängerkrieg gave In Extremo their first German number-one album in 2008. Citing musical differences, drummer Der Morgenstern left in 2010, yet the band carried on, delivering Sterneneisen in 2011 and the live album Sterneneisen Live the following year. Kunstraub arrived in 2013, introducing new drummer Florian “Specki T.D.” Speckardt and reaching number two on the German sales chart, confirming the loyalty of the group’s domestic audience. In 2015 the band issued the 13-track, career-spanning box set 20 Wahre Jahre; a year later came the twelfth studio album, Quid Pro Quo. Boris Pfeiffer, known onstage as Yellow Pfeiffer, died in Wandlitz, Germany, on January 24, 2022, at age 53, days after attending a rally against COVID-19 restrictions.
