Biography
Not even the creators behind the Monkees television program foresaw the enduring international wave their concept would trigger across decades and continents. One manifestation of that phenomenon is the Portuguese punk-pop outfit 4Taste. The group originated as a made-up act within the hit Portuguese teen drama Morangos com Açúcar, stepping in for the earlier soap-derived ensemble D'ZRT that had already achieved multiple platinum certifications. Its lineup—lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Luke D'Eça, lead guitarist Nélson Patrão, bassist David Gama, and drummer Francisco Borges—coalesced during their on-screen performances for the series. Capitalizing on the fictional band's rapid fanbase and the program's massive viewership, the show's producers converted 4Taste into an authentic recording act. Their self-titled debut album, released in late November 2006, achieved double-platinum status on the day it appeared, debuting at number three on the Portuguese charts thanks to the immediate impact of its lead single, the power ballad "Só Tu Podes Alcançar." Rooted in a punk-pop style reminiscent of Simple Plan, McFly, and the All-American Rejects, the record swiftly captured the Portuguese teen and tween markets, ascending to the top of the national chart and attaining four-times platinum certification in under five months. An extensive and highly attended tour ensued.
