British producer Evan Majumdar-Swift, widely recognized under the alias 96 Back, crafts intricately layered electronic compositions that weave together IDM, ambient, pop, grime, and additional influences. His initial outing came via the 2018 EP Provisional Electronics, which centered on a direct electro approach, yet subsequent work expanded into broader stylistic fusions across the paired 2021 albums 9696 Dream and Love Letters, Nine Through Six. Further explorations in sonic detail marked the 2024 release tender, exit.

Born in Sheffield, Majumdar-Swift is the son of promoter Matt Swift, who organized the Jive Turkey parties that paved the way for Warp Records. At age 18, performing as 96 Back, he delivered his debut DJ set for Boiler Room during an off-camera event tied to Sheffield’s electro imprint Central Processing Unit. That same year saw him become the first Sheffield-based artist to appear on CPU with Provisional Electronics. While living in Manchester and pursuing production studies at the BIMM Institute, he issued his first full-length Excitable, Girl on CPU in early 2019; later that year the EP Issue in Surreal followed on the same label, featuring remixes from Jensen Interceptor and Sync 24, and he also contributed to a split-single alongside Happa.

During 2020, 96 Back placed the TBQFH EP with Hypercolour and self-released the digital album ADRISM, described as a “pseudo break-up album” and featuring a collaboration with Skee Mask; additional EPs surfaced that year, among them his debut Local Action offering Sugilite. The label then presented both 2021 full-lengths, with 9696 Dream delivering futuristic club abstractions and Love Letters, Nine Through Six leaning toward hyperpop sensibilities. Sandwiched between those albums, Local Action released the grime-tinged Flex Time EP, which included a guest appearance by Canadian rapper Cadence Weapon. Majumdar-Swift rejoined CPU in 2022 for the concise soundtrack The Neon Pack (Original Soundtrack), created for a 360 immersive installation, while Local Action simultaneously issued the pastoral, collage-oriented Cute Melody, Window Down!. Aus Music hosted the 2023 club-focused EP Crass, then teamed 96 Back with Martyn Bootyspoon for the 2024 single Thicc!. Crafted ahead of his relocation to London, the experimental tender, exit appeared on SVBKVLT.
