Anish Kumar

Anish Kumar operates out of England as a DJ and producer whose style merges electronic forms with the musical traditions of his South Asian background. Recognition first arrived through the 2021 Brenda Lee-sampling track “Little Miss Dynamite,” followed by his joint effort with Barry Can't Swim on the breakout single “Blackpool Boulevard.” Three well-received EPs cleared the path for the 2023 release A Mixtape by Anish Kumar.

Kumar began issuing music during his time at Cambridge University, opening with the 2021 cut “Little Miss Dynamite.” Built around a sample of Brenda Lee’s 1964 recording “Is It True,” the track drew the attention of BBC DJ Annie Mac and signaled the high-energy, far-reaching character of his productions. That same year he linked with Barry Can't Swim for “Blackpool Boulevard,” issued via Ninja Tune’s Technicolour label. Across the next two years he tested new directions, first on the Postcards EP and then on 2022’s Bollywood Super Hits. The latter mined select Hindi film samples and reshaped them into hypnotic, club-focused tracks that earned praise from Bonobos and Four Tet. After completing the third EP, Care About Me, Kumar moved into longer territory with 2023’s A Mixtape by Anish Kumar.
