Biography
Ashley Parker Angel first gained widespread attention in the early 2000s through his roles as singer, songwriter, and actor inside the boy band O-Town. After the ensemble dissolved in 2003 he launched a solo path, delivering the gold-certified debut album Soundtrack to Your Life in 2006. By 2007 his interests had turned to stage performance, placing him in the cast of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Hairspray. In 2012 he formed Mansions of Arcadia with Xandy Barry of Wax Ltd. and issued the single "Don't Let Me Down." Acting commitments continued in the years that followed, encompassing films, television, video games, and a later Broadway run in Wicked.
A talent agency discovered him in his native Redding, California, and arranged an audition for the 2000 ABC series Making the Band. His youthful appearance and vocal ability earned him a position in the five-member group O-Town, which secured a major-label deal as part of the show's arrangement. Lou Pearlman co-created the act, which released two albums, among them the platinum-selling self-titled 2001 debut, before operations ceased in 2002. Angel began working independently two years later. MTV proposed documenting his reentry into music through the series There and Back: Ashley Parker Angel, which premiered in January 2006 and chronicled his attempts to obtain a contract, sharpen performance skills, and care for his family. Following the season finale that year, Soundtrack to Your Life appeared; its title track, co-written with the Matrix for his son Lyric, anchored an album whose mature melodic '70s singer-songwriter and power-pop approach replaced O-Town's teen dance-pop. The record entered the Billboard 200 at number five.
Angel portrayed Link Larkin in Hairspray beginning in 2007. Subsequent acting work included voice roles in video games plus parts in films and digital shorts, and he declined an invitation to rejoin O-Town for its 2011 reunion.
