Emerging amid the thriving wave of adolescent-oriented pop, the youthful vocal ensemble Dream Street stepped forward as New York natives already seasoned in entertainment. Selected by producers Louis Baldonieri and Brian Lukow to tap into the sustained appetite for such acts, the group came together in 1999 with members Greg Raposo, Christopher Trousdale, Frankie Galasso, Matt Ballinger, and Jesse McCartney. Early momentum built through advertising campaigns tied to Kellogg's Frosted Flakes and Kraft Lunchables. July 2000 brought their first recording, the single "They Don't Understand," placed on the soundtrack for Pokemon 2000, The Power of One. Their debut album under the band name followed on Lava/Atlantic before the year closed.
