Natural emerged as Trans Continental's follow-up project in the realm of assembled boy bands, launched by the same team that had previously propelled the Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync into widespread popularity. In contrast to those earlier dance-pop sensations, the five-piece outfit functioned as an actual band, with its members handling their own instrumentation and adopting the prevailing rock attire of the era, consisting of uniform black outfits, cropped spiky hairstyles, and expressions that favored intensity over charm. The group launched its recording career in late 2001 via the single "Put Your Arms Around Me," penned by established teen-pop songwriter Steve Kipner of "Genie in a Bottle" fame, with ambitions to dominate MTV rotations, teen publications, school corridors, and young fans' bedrooms in the same manner as its predecessors.

Formed during the summer of 1999 in Orlando, Florida, the lineup of Ben Bledsoe, "J" Josh Horn, Michael Johnson, Patrick King Jr., and Marc Terenzi first performed a cappella at tryouts and secured a contract with a regional production outfit. Nearly twelve months passed before the ensemble received its pivotal opportunity, which arrived through an appearance on the German reality program 24 Hours. Strong viewership prompted a trip to Germany in August 2000, where the band leveraged its newfound exposure, highlighted by a main-stage slot at the Pop-Komm festival. Following the return from that market, Orlando industry figure Louis J. Pearlman placed Natural under a management agreement and orchestrated plans for a stateside commercial launch.
