Having concluded his run with the noise rock instrumental outfit Science vs. Witchcraft in Rochester, New York, guitarist Mike Rheinheimer elected to pursue a gentler musical direction once that group dissolved. He began laying down tracks for the self-titled debut EP of his fresh endeavor Attic Abasement in 2006. Issued the next year, the EP reflected a stark contrast to his earlier work through its lo-fi textures and echoes of Pavement, underscoring a relaxed sensibility. In 2008 he self-released the full-length Swim Through the Dirt; though the project remained largely a solo vehicle, Rheinheimer enlisted additional Rochester players to augment the live presentation. By 2010 the ultra-lo-fi cassette Don’t Hate Fuck surfaced alongside the favorably received sophomore album Dancing Is Depressing. Following a four-year hiatus, a split LP with fellow Rochester act Nod arrived, after which the musicians returned to the studio in 2015 to capture fresh material. Early in 2016 they revealed plans for the third album Dream News, which Father/Daughter Records issued that May to favorable notices.
