Auletta, a five-piece German band drawing sonic cues from the Libertines’ loose-limbed indie rock, took their name from a tiny Italian village that once hosted their holiday. The lineup coalesced in Mainz in 2005 around frontman Alexander Zwick, guitarist Martin Kloos, and siblings Johannes Juschzak on bass and Daniel Juschzak on drums. Attention followed in 2007 when the group played Emergenza European Festival and claimed victory at the Rockbuster Competition. Support dates alongside Art Brut and Kilians paved the way for a deal with EMI, which released the debut album Pöbelei & Poesie in 2009. Representing Rheinland-Pfalz with “Sommerdiebe,” they placed fourteenth at the 2010 Bundesvision Song Contest. After opening for the Kooks across Europe and adding keyboardist Chris Stiller, the band returned in 2011 with Make Love Work, their first entry inside the Top 40.
