Originating from Orange County, NY, the emo-punk quartet Autopilot Off assembled in 1996 with an initial identity as Cooter and a lineup consisting of guitarists Chris Hughes and Chris Johnson, drummer Phil Robinson, and bassist Rob Kucharek. The group cultivated supporters primarily via energetic performances that placed them alongside MXPX, Less Than Jake, H20, and Sum 41 across numerous '90s bills. Their first full-length effort, Looking Up, surfaced in 1999 through Fastmusic and later received a reissue under the Autopilot Off moniker. A split release with Slick Shoes followed in 2000 on Fueled by Ramen, after which the band adopted its current name ahead of inking a deal with Island Records. That partnership yielded an untitled Island EP in spring 2002, succeeded by the April 2004 arrival of the album Make a Sound. Following their departure from Island, the members declared an indefinite hiatus in August 2005. Hughes subsequently established the Broken English imprint, operating under the East West umbrella, in partnership with producer John Naclerio.
