Originally hailing from Toronto, Beliefs launched as a shoegaze duo but later abandoned their dense guitar textures in favor of a leaner, more expansive synth-driven post-punk approach. The project originated in 2010 after vocalists and multi-instrumentalists Josh Korody and Jesse Crowe connected through a shared appreciation for noise pop acts such as Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine. Early local performances around the city led to a deal with Hand Drawn Dracula, which released their first single, “Catch My Breath,” in 2012. Their self-titled debut album followed in 2013 and was soon succeeded by a split 7" with Greys. The band appeared at multiple festivals while sharing bills with A Place to Bury Strangers, the Breeders, and Suuns. Leaper, their second full-length, surfaced in 2015; that same year the duo supplied a cover of “Sound of Thunder” for the Duran Duran tribute compilation Making Patterns Rhyme. Habitat, their third album, emerged in 2017 and marked a decisive shift toward electronics over guitars, yielding a darker atmosphere reminiscent of the Cure and Portishead.
