Detroit's Black Noi$e earns acclaim for both his detailed, layered hip-hop productions and his open, subtly warped house and electro material. The hypnotic, elaborate rhythms supported MCs including Earl Sweatshirt, Danny Brown, and ZelooperZ, each of whom featured on the producer's 2020 album Oblivion.

Born Robert Mansel, Black Noi$e absorbed an array of styles during his formative years, ranging from punk to hip-hop. As a teenager he performed guitar in hardcore groups before shifting focus to hip-hop beats, sensing a shared intensity in the two pursuits. He partnered with Danny Brown producer Skywlkr under the name Bulletproof Dolphin, served as DJ for M.I.A. during her 2013 tour, and created tracks for Remy Banks, Deniro Farrar, King 810, and additional artists. The 2014 mixtape Nonbelievers, made with BK Beats, preceded the solo EP Memento Mori in 2016. Black Noi$e joined rapper Navy Blue for the 2017 EP Soul Golden, while his initial pair of house releases also surfaced that year: a self-titled EP on Ann Arbor's Vanity Press Records and Time Crisis, issued via Shigeto's Portage Garage Sounds.

The full-length Illusions arrived on Vanity Press in 2018, featuring co-production from Teklife-affiliated DJ Taye, New York beatmaker Nolife, and Detroit house producer John F.M. Black Noi$e handled production on "The Mint" from Earl Sweatshirt's widely praised 2018 album Some Rap Songs and accompanied the rapper on tour as DJ. He became the first act signed to Sweatshirt's Tan Cressida imprint, affiliated with Warner Records, and the track "The Band" featuring Liv.e appeared ahead of the 2020 album Oblivion. Further contributors on that release included Danny Brown, bbymutha, MIKE, and additional voices.
