Biography
Black Wizard formed in Vancouver, British Columbia, as a Canadian stoner doom metal quartet. High school friends Kyle Fee on bass, Eugene Parkomenko on drums, and vocalists/guitarists Adam Grant along with Johnny de Courcy established the group in 2009. Their sound draws from Black Sabbath, Sleep, and Witch while also incorporating echoes of Neil Young with Crazy Horse, Dinosaur Jr., and a touch of glam.
The band tracked its self-titled debut, issued independently, during 2010 alongside engineer Michael Kraushaar and followed that effort with the 2011 single “Mountain Bitch”/“Jesus.” Later the same year, Kenny Cook—known as “Stokes” and also active in Anciients—stepped in for de Courcy on guitar, which positioned Grant as sole vocalist.
Black Wizard delivered the sophomore album Young Wisdom in 2013, again working with Kraushaar. Following an intensive period of road work, Fee departed and Evan Joel took over on bass. The revised quartet released the single “Eliminator” in 2014 and the live album Live at Bully’s the next year. In 2015 the group joined Listenable Records and put out its fourth full-length, New Waste, in early 2016. That record marked their first wide-release project and led to a North American tour.
