Biography
Blackout Beach originated as an outlet for the Vancouver singer/songwriter Carey Mercer, already known through Frog Eyes and Blue Pine. The effort began under the name Bertrand Russell and the Country Club before assuming its present identity once Blue Pine disbanded in 2001. While Mercer’s contributions to Frog Eyes are marked by dense literacy and frequent gloom, Blackout Beach replaces that band’s loose, frantic energy with a thicker, more atmospheric and exploratory approach. Its debut recording, Light Flows the Putrid Dawn, appeared on the Soft Abuse label in 2004 and was succeeded four years later by Skin of Evil.
