Biography
Bloodbound stands as a steadfast pillar of Swedish heavy metal, maintaining a steadfast commitment to classic heavy metal foundations while incorporating power and symphonic flourishes that have defined their output from the start. The group surfaced in 2005 via Nosferatu, its shadowy aesthetic—complete with corpse paint-style makeup—hinting at black metal leanings, yet the actual music aligned more closely with anthemic power metal acts such as Helloween and Hammerfall. Subsequent releases continued this trajectory through epic fantasy metal explorations on Tabula Rasa (2009), Stormborn (2014), Rise of the Dragon Empire (2019), and Tales from the North (2024).
Tomas Olsson on lead guitar and Fredrik Bergh on keyboards launched the band in summer 2004 after prior stints in various groups and an initial collaboration in the short-lived Street Talk. To establish immediate impact, the pair recruited seasoned vocalist Urban Breed, previously of Tad Morose, then rounded out the roster with drummer Pelle Åkerlind from Morgana LeFay, bassist Johan Sohlberg, and rhythm guitarist Henrik Olsson, Tomas’s brother. This five-piece delivered the well-received 2006 debut Nosferatu, though the much-touted “blood brothers” bond had already fractured by the 2007 follow-up Book of the Dead, which featured Michael Bormann on vocals and saw Bergh assume bass responsibilities following Sohlberg’s exit. The original configuration reconvened for 2009’s Tabula Rasa, only to fracture once more ahead of 2011’s Unholy Cross, which introduced vocalist Patrik J Selleby and bassist Anders Broman. The rousing In the Name of Metal arrived in 2012, succeeded by the expansive, Game of Thrones-inspired works Stormborn (2014), War of Dragons (2017), and Rise of the Dragon Empire (2019); the concert document One Night of Blood, captured at Masters of Rock MMXV, surfaced in 2016. Creatures of the Dark Realm, the ninth studio album, emerged in 2021 and upheld the group’s sword-and-sorcery thematic focus, while 2024’s Tales from the North offered a Norse mythology-driven power metal celebration centered on history and legend.
