Bob Hund rank among Sweden's foremost indie rock outfits thanks to a distinctive blend of eccentric energy and propulsive rhythms. The group first surfaced in the opening years of the 1990s and quickly developed a reputation for chaotic yet humorous performances that endeared them to a wide audience. Their breakthrough arrived via the 1996 follow-up Omslag: Martin Kann, which reached number 11 on the Swedish charts and secured the Swedish Grammy for Best Lyrics. Continued popularity followed, evidenced by the chart-topping Stenåldern kan börja in 2001 and the Top Ten placement of 2009's Folkmusik för folk som inte kan bete sig som folk.

Singer/songwriter Thomas Öberg and keyboardist Jonas Jonasson formed Bob Hund—Swedish for “Bob Dog”—in 1991 while still attending high school. The Stockholm-based ensemble initially delivered off-kilter rock numbers reminiscent of XTC, Pere Ubu, and Talking Heads, even while harboring a deep admiration for Kraftwerk. Although electronic textures would later appear in their work, that influence remained dormant for several years. Öberg further sets the band apart by singing in the Scanian dialect and pairing lyrics that juxtapose lighthearted and weighty themes.

The original roster also included bass player Mats Hellquist, drummer Mats Andersson, and guitarists John Essing and Conny Nimmersjö. After performing at Hultsfredsfestivalen, Sweden's largest festival, the group signed with Silence Records in 1993; their self-titled debut EP appeared months later. Extensive club touring reinforced their standing as a volatile live act, culminating in a 1994 Swedish Grammi for Best Live Act. The same year saw the release of their first full-length album, also titled Bob Hund. Omslag: Martin Kann earned another Grammi for Best Lyrics in 1996, while 1998's Jag Rear Ut Min Sjal! Allt Skall Bort!!! received a Guldägget Award for Best Packaging. A live document, Bob Hund Sover Aldrig, followed in 1999.

In winter 2001 the single “Ska Du Hanga Med? Na!!,” drawn from Stenåldern Kan Börja, became the band's first release to chart outside Sweden when it entered the Norwegian listings; the album itself marked their initial number-one placement at home. Activity slowed during the early 2000s, yet the band issued the demo compilation Ingenting and the singles anthology 10 År Bakåt & 100 År Framåt in 2002. After the limited-edition vinyl EP Det Där Nya som Skulle Vara Så Bra, Bob Hund entered a hiatus to pursue the parallel project Bergman Rock, retaining the same personnel but allowing Öberg to switch to English vocals in order to reach fresh listeners. Bergman Rock produced albums in 2003 and 2005, while Öberg and Jonasson also issued a one-off dance-rock record as Sci-Fi SKANE.

The beat-driven aesthetic of Sci-Fi SKANE fused with the group's established style upon Bob Hund's 2009 return with Folkmusik för Folk som Inte Kan Bete sig som Folk; drummer Christian Gabel joined the same year. Three further releases arrived in rapid succession: the Stumfilm EP in 2010, Det Överexponerade Gömstället in 2011, and Låter som Miljarder in 2012. During this period the ensemble expanded its range, veering toward the frantic territory of Modest Mouse and Electric Six on the rock side while finally integrating Kraftwerk-inspired atmospheric and textural elements on the experimental side.

Following this productive stretch, Bob Hund marked their 2013 twentieth anniversary by selling all instruments and studio gear at a self-organized festival, then restarting with borrowed equipment from fans and music schools to foster a more egalitarian concert environment. Late the next year they appeared at the Malmo Opera House accompanied by a full orchestra under Johan Nydesjö's direction, staging an elaborate spectacle that included “Bob Hund Supermarket” merchandise sales in the lobby and costumed performances; the event yielded both a DVD and the live album #bobhundopera. In 2016 the band recorded the party single “Brooklyn Salsa” and prepared an eleventh studio album for release later that year. Klassiskbobhundkonsert emerged in 2018, presenting favorite songs backed by the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra.
