American rapper David Hutto introduced his menacing scarecrow alter ego Boondox around the year 2000, drawing attention from Insane Clown Posse. He became the first Southern act signed to their expanding Psychopathic Records roster, signaling the label's push to broaden its twisted rap-rock sound across the independent scene. His distinction from fellow Detroit artists showed through a rural costume of scarecrow hat, flannel shirt, and country boots, paired with banjo and harmonica accents layered over his beats.

Born in Richmond, Georgia and raised in Covington, Hutto performed on bass guitar in several area rock groups before shifting focus to rapping. Like others on the Psychopathic roster, he initially distributed material through underground tapes with the local collective Southern Hustlas, Inc. A tape sold at an ICP show reached the group itself, leading to phone exchanges with member Violent J and the recording of Boondox's debut studio album The Harvest in Detroit. Issued in July 2006 and entirely produced by the label's Mike E. Clark, the project gained further exposure when Boondox appeared on Blaze Ya Dead Homie's Tombstone Terror Tour in late summer 2006.

Following the 2007 PunkinHed EP, Boondox delivered his next full-length effort Krimson Creek in 2008. That release reached the top of the Billboard Heatseekers chart and included contributions from ICP and Blaze Ya Dead Homie. South of Hell surfaced in 2010 alongside the documentary Southern Bled, marking his strongest chart performance to that point at number 54 on the Billboard album ranking.

In subsequent years Hutto stepped back from the Boondox identity, departing Psychopathic to issue a gangsta rap project under the name Turncoat Dirty before joining associates in the Underground Avengers, whose debut Skarecrows, Weirdos & ClaAsholes arrived in 2012. He rejoined Psychopathic as Boondox in 2014 for the fourth album Abaddon, which featured Big Hoodoo, ICP, Jelly Roll, and Syn. The following year he moved to Majik Ninja, where his initial release The Murder appeared in early 2017.
