Bootleg established his reputation within the Midwest hardcore rap underground both through his role in the notorious Flint, MI, collective known as the Dayton Family and through his independent releases. Although numerous MCs describe criminal exploits and gangsta living, few possess genuine firsthand knowledge. Having faced repeated legal troubles and incarceration, Bootleg draws his lyrics straight from lived events rather than invention. That authenticity distinguishes him among his imitators and cements his standing as one of the region’s most notorious hardcore rappers.

After aligning with fellow Flint MCs Shoestring and Matt Hinkle, Bootleg named the resulting trio the Dayton Family in reference to the dangerous, illicit street where they resided. The group issued its debut album, What’s on My Mind?, in 1995 and followed it a year later with the gold-selling F.B.I. Despite generating considerable underground attention, the three members soon faced fresh criminal charges that returned them to prison. For Bootleg this was familiar territory; he had already passed most of the 1990s incarcerated, gathering the raw material that shaped his street-focused verses.

Following his eventual release, Bootleg devoted his time outside prison walls to completing a solo project, the 1999 album Death Before Dishonesty. Partly because of the three-year gap since F.B.I., the record underperformed commercially, prompting Relativity Records to end their association. In 2001 Bootleg resurfaced on the Detroit-based Overcore imprint, home to Esham and Natas, issuing his follow-up Hated By Many, Loved By Few the same year the remaining Dayton Family members also dropped new material.
