Brennen Leigh performs as a vocalist, songwriter, guitarist, and mandolinist, recognized for her precise flatpicking, pointed narrative craft, and a backward-looking style anchored in classic country, bluegrass, and honky-tonk. A native of North Dakota now based in Nashville, she has worked steadily since the early 2000s and delivered well-regarded recordings including The Box in 2010, Prairie Love Letter recorded with Asleep at the Wheel in 2020, and Ain't Through Honky Tonkin' Yet in 2023, each reflecting different strands of American roots music. She has also issued albums with her spouse Noel Mckay as Mckay & Leigh, and her material has been recorded by Lee Ann Womack, Rodney Crowell, Sunny Sweeney, and Charley Crockett.

Born in North Dakota and raised in a musical household in rural Minnesota, Leigh and her brother Seth Hulbert emerged early as accomplished musicians in the upper Midwest folk and bluegrass community. After moving to Austin in 2002 she added Western swing to her range and met her husband and frequent collaborator Noel Mckay. Her first solo album, the 2004 collection Too Thin to Plow, mixed covers with original songs. Traditional country, blues, and modern bluegrass threads ran through the favorably received 2010 album The Box, while her initial project with Mckay, Before the World Was Made in 2013, balanced wit, heartache, and whimsy. Two releases appeared in 2015: the holiday set In the Bleak Midwinter made with Mckay and the solo outing Sings Lefty Frizzell, which addressed the honky-tonk icon’s catalog. She relocated to Nashville ahead of 2020’s Prairie Love Letter, an album that used old-time bluegrass forms to recount experiences from her South Dakota and Minnesota upbringing. In 2022 she collaborated with Asleep at the Wheel on a lively group of songs cast in 1940s Western swing style, and the following year she issued Ain't Through Honky Tonkin' Yet, a vintage barroom traditional-country project produced by Chris Scruggs.
