Britton took their name from the surname of frontman and guiding force Michael Britton when the group assembled in the United States during the mid-1980s. Essentially a straightforward hard-rock outfit styled after Dokken and Whitesnake, the remaining members were Jim McMellen on guitar, Pat Schunk on guitar and keyboards, Skip Flank on bass, and Gary Holland on drums. Holland’s prior tenure with Great White meant he faced little challenge adjusting to Britton’s comparable brand of murky melodic rock. The band’s first release, the album Rock Hard, failed to make any significant impact, though it offered a capable performance marred by substandard production values. In the wake of that record the musicians each reassessed their professional paths, resulting in the group’s dissolution.
