Emerging amid the raw indie rock surge that coalesced in the modest northern English city of Sheffield alongside the Arctic Monkeys, the Long Blondes, and Milburn, Bromheads Jacket functions as a clamorous three-piece whose sonic touchstones span the Small Faces through Blur. Their emphatically British songwriting perspective has prompted likenings to the Kinks and Squeeze, casting the trio in a relationship to the Arctic Monkeys comparable to that of the Kaiser Chiefs to Franz Ferdinand. The band assembled in 2004, built around vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist Tim Hampton together with bassist Jono West and drummer Dan Potter. After signing with Marquis Cha Cha, Bromheads Jacket launched in late 2005 via the single “Woolley Bridge,” which was rapidly followed by “What Ifs and Maybes” and the taut Britpop cut “Trip to the Golden Arches.” Additional notice followed when Mike Skinner of the Streets asked Bromheads Jacket to record a version of his track “When You Wasn’t Famous,” issued as the B-side of a Streets single. The group’s first full-length album, Dits from the Commuter Belt, appeared in November 2006.
