R&B singer Carleen Anderson encountered music from childhood onward, since her mother Vicki Anderson and her stepfather, pianist Bobby Byrd, spent the 1960s and 1970s on the road alongside James Brown. With her parents frequently touring, she spent her formative years in Houston, Texas, under the care of her grandparents before moving to Los Angeles to enroll in music studies at the University of Southern California. Although Anderson initially intended to become a music educator rather than a performer, an invitation from her mother to appear with the J.B. All Stars in London around 1988 prompted a shift in direction. She established a home base in England, became a member of Young Disciples in the early 1990s, and contributed vocals to the group’s sole album, the 1991 release Road to Freedom. Following the band’s dissolution in 1993, Anderson launched a solo career that produced the albums True Spirit in 1994 and Blessed Burden in 1998, while also providing guest vocals on Bryan Ferry’s 1994 album Mamouna, Paul Weller’s self-titled 1992 record and 1995 album Stanley Road, and Dr. John’s 1998 project Anutha Zone. She later accepted an invitation to join the Brand New Heavies, yet the collaboration proved brief; she departed the group in the early 2000s to focus on completing a third solo album.
