Colombian pop singer Carolina Laó first stepped onto a stage at age six, performing the traditional song "Campesina Santanderiana" during an elementary-school event. After earning a management degree upon her 1996 graduation from a local university, she became a vocalist with the Colombian tropical ensemble Alquimia and interpreted selections from la Sonora Matancera. A February 14, 1998, appearance at New York’s Copacabana alongside salsa star Celia Cruz led the young performer to launch a solo career that began with El Son de Ahora and continued with Dulce Veneno, an album produced in Miami and San Juan, Puerto Rico, by Ramón Sánchez and Alejandro Jaen and spotlighting her original composition “Quiero Perderme.”
