Biography
Born as Anthony Williams in Harlesden, London, England during 1975, Chukki launched his path by creating the Echo Tone Hi Fi sound system and taking the stage name Chukki Brown. Stonehead from the UK-based Volcano sound handled production on his first release, the track ‘Goodas Gal’, which announced his arrival on the British dancehall circuit. That singular approach prompted studio sessions, most often with Everton Samuels of the Ruff Cut Band. Under the name Chukki Star in 1994 he issued several successful singles—‘Career Time’, ‘Evilous System’, ‘Who Dem Fi Rate’, and ‘Almighty Father’—plus the duet ‘Reggae Music So Sweet’ recorded with Don Campbell. In 1995 he supplied DJ lyrics to one of Aswad’s many remixes of ‘Warrior Charge’. He appeared on the western Kingston sound system circuit the following year and then worked with several leading Jamaican producers. The first of those collaborations was a combination with Edi Fitzroy at Bobby Digital’s studio, which opened further work with African Star, Black Scorpio and Yard Face Productions. Among his strongest pieces were the Haile Selassie anthem ‘The Most High’, the song ‘Time To Go’, and the popular pairing ‘The Look Of Love’ with Gregory Isaacs. By 1997 his Makiel label single ‘Forever I Shall Praise’ together with the hit duet ‘Hard Times’ featuring Aisha had placed him among Britain’s foremost DJs. He sustained that profile through 1998 while recording his debut album with the Mad Professor. July 2000 brought crossover attention when he joined UK soap star Sid Owen for a version of Michael Jackson’s ‘Good Thing Going’.
