Collapsis emerged in Chapel Hill as a southern rock outfit that fused country textures with bar-band energy. The group drew its core membership from the breakup of Queen Sarah Saturday, which supplied guitarist and vocalist Ryan Pickett along with bassist and vocalist Chris Holloway. When local stalwarts Dillon Fence disbanded, their drummer Scott Carle moved into the new lineup. At roughly the same moment guitarist and vocalist Mike Garrigan took a law-school professor’s counsel and abandoned legal studies to focus entirely on music. The decision proved fruitful once rising regional popularity led the band to secure a deal with Cherry Records, an imprint of Universal. Collapsis promptly recorded the self-produced Chartreuse EP to meet demand from their expanding audience, then spent a stretch of 1999 away from Chapel Hill tracking their first major-label album. That project, Dirty Wake, appeared in early 2000.
