Biography
Cormorant draws inspiration from an earlier psychedelic chapter in metal's evolution, fusing elements of progressive, power, and black metal into their sound. The group formed in 2007 in the Bay Area with Arthur von Nagel handling bass and vocals alongside Nick Cohon on guitar and Brennan Kunkel on drums. Driven by a strong creative momentum that echoed the force of their music, the band quickly produced and issued their debut EP, The Last Tree, before the close of that year. In 2008 they expanded from a trio into a quartet by recruiting guitarist Matt Solis, then collaborated with producer Billy Anderson to complete their first full-length album, Metazoa, in 2009. Remaining unsigned throughout this period, Cormorant handled all recording, releases, and live bookings on their own terms. They sustained this independent approach with the arrival of their second album, Dwellings, in 2011, followed by Earth Diver in 2014 and the stylistically varied Diaspora in 2017.
